World Wi_Fi Day

Let’s cast our minds back to a time when the extent of communications began and ended with a piece of paper, a pen, and some ink. Today, our mobile phones and laptop computers come with wireless networking technology, Wi-Fi, built in.

We’ve come a long way. The evolution of connectivity has catapulted society forward by some way, which has meant we are now able to be far more interconnected than ever before, no matter where you are in the world. So, whether you’re at home streaming your favorite TV show whilst doom scrolling on Facebook, on the train catching up with emails, at a shopping complex perusing the latest offers in stores or at the supermarket picking up some groceries – you stay connected.

Today, we celebrate innovation and technological advancement in communications by recognising World Wi-Fi day.

A brief history in time – the story of Wi-Fi

Wi-Fi was first invented and released in 1997 and has evolved from its first known form; a set of standards which define communication for wireless local area networks aka WLANs. Thereafter, a higher-level specification for Wi-Fi was created which saw two MB of data transfer wirelessly between two devices – the conception of wireless connectivity!

Since then, it has continued to evolve and permeate our everyday lives with its simple to use and easy to install interface. Wi-Fi has now given birth to the next stage of interconnectedness; The Internet of Things or commonly known as IoT.

A staggering amount of electrical consumer devices that exchange information at a mind-boggling rate has allowed for industries to leverage both the increasing number of Wi-Fi enabled devices that are now available and the consumer data that’s fed into these devices. An example of this is our SmartStore solution which sees the provision of in-store Wi-Fi that helps to personalise shopping experiences for customers, and increase average basket values for retailers.

Keeping unconnected communities connected

Today, 55% of all households globally have access to the internet whilst 80% of households in poorer countries don’t and 75% of students in rural areas are not able to access remote learning. At Hughes, we understand the impact that these connections have.

Providing connectivity, bridging the digital divide even in the most distributed locations is what we do best and as a result were able to facilitate internet access to learning and development tools for a remote community in the Brazilian Amazon when schools closed due to the Pandemic.

In addition to that, Hughes’ satellite solutions allowed viewers to learn about Amazonian customs and culture through the documentation of a local indigenous woman’s daily routine on social media which amassed millions of followers.

Reliable, secure always-on connectivity for all

The importance of connectivity is one thing, however, the quality of service that’s received is quite another. We know there’s a big difference between having Wi-Fi and having reliable, secure Wi-Fi. Slow, patchy and unsecure Wi-Fi coverage can be costly.

The provision of Wi-Fi and network connectivity has increased the opportunity for threat via cyber-attacks which many businesses have fallen victim to. Hughes can help.

We offer a multi-pronged approach to your network security challenges through our SOC Services, Managed Firewall and Business Continuity solutions. And to top it all off, we can manage all of this for you so you can get back to the important things.
