The Role of the Network Against Climate Change

On 22nd April 2022, it’s Earth Day, an annual day dedicated to driving action for the protection of our planet. This year’s theme is ‘Invest In Our Planet’, and individuals, businesses and the government will be encouraged to come together and take action on climate change.

Digital network and communications companies have a pivotal role to play against climate change, our technology helping to save resources, connect people and reduce waste. In this blog, we take a closer look at how the implementation of this technology is helping to support ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) goals, then explore how Hughes is continuing its drive to be a sustainable, responsible business.

The mission of Earth Day

The first Earth Day was in 1970. Since then, this environmental movement has grown to work with more than 150,000 partners in over 192 countries to drive positive action for our planet. This year, speed is of the essence, with evidence of climate change becoming more apparent every day. Earth Day 2022 calls upon all businesses, individuals and the government to “act (boldly), innovate (broadly), and implement (equitably)” for the future of the planet.

How digital transformation can help to combat climate change

Digital transformation has accelerated over the last few years. And, as organisations enhance their connectivity and adopt IoT (Internet of Things) technology, there are more opportunities to progress with their ESG goals. IoT technology enables companies to remotely monitor and manage their operations, optimising their activity and supporting more energy-efficient, less wasteful processes.

Meanwhile, the environmental benefits we’ve experienced from teams working remotely over the last two years have been significant. With much of the world in lockdown for most of 2020, household greenhouse gas emissions dropped by 10%. Despite some return to onsite work, remote or hybrid work remains a much more viable and favourable option than before the pandemic.

As this digital transformation evolves and companies experience the increased potential of remote connectivity solutions, more opportunities for becoming a more sustainable, responsible business open up.

The importance of the network

Business leaders need to evaluate their ESG goals and prioritise how they can harness the digital tools required to reach them. Furthermore, it is critical to assess their network. How can these new tools and platforms integrate seamlessly into their network and succeed in delivering value?

Managed network services can support a company’s digital and sustainable transformation, helping to optimise network capacity, availability and performance while streamlining IT and maintenance costs.

How Hughes supports businesses with sustainability

Our mission is to connect people, enterprises and things everywhere. Innovating constantly, we seek to develop network technologies and services that offer global solutions for a better-connected future and, in doing so, help organisations reduce their carbon footprint and become environmentally and socially responsible businesses.

With technology, such as our HughesNet® internet service, the Hughes JUPITER™ System satellite ground technology and HughesON™, tens of millions of people worldwide are connected while thousands of sites have access to high-quality, resilient wired and wireless solutions.

Leveraging network management technology, such as managed SD-WAN and SD-Branch, Hughes Managed Network Services enable businesses to roll out digital tools that increase the sustainability of their processes and support their ESG goals while ensuring their networks can support optimum performance, availability and security.

How Hughes is a sustainable, responsible business

As well as supporting other businesses with their sustainability, Hughes is dedicated to its own ESG goals.

Committed to the environment

Hughes demonstrates commitment to reducing its ecological footprint by supporting local clean-up efforts, employee programs like company-wide recycling, and Earth Day celebrations.

Committed to our world

Hughes supports developing nations in the wake of natural and human-induced disasters, helping emergency response efforts by providing quick, easy-to-use connectivity solutions. As well as donating our satellite terminals, we work in partnership with other leading satellite communication providers to offer technical training and satellite airtime so that people in need have access to turn-key solutions in response to these emergencies.

Committed to making a difference

We enable online training and education in emerging economies, providing high-speed broadband access to schools, libraries and rural health care providers worldwide.

Committed to our communities

We work with global communities, providing connections in remote areas that give access to essential services, such as medical and health support and education, and also promote a wider awareness of different cultures and traditions.

Committed to education

We help build future leaders in technology, teaching hands-on Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM) skills in youth organisations.

Committed to our people

Closer to home, we have won Workplace Excellence awards for employee experience, supporting organisations, events and volunteer opportunities in employee communities.
